Avery looked at the principal. “Dumb question, can my toy dog come inside the school?”

“Sure.” Miss Fitzgerald smiled. “It’s a toy dog, so they won’t be an allergy issue or a poop-in-the-school issue.”

Rose bolted in. “ALRIGHT! I AM NOT AN ISSUE!” 

“It’s like…Martha Speaks, but a toy dog and she’s pink and small.” Avery said. “To all of you who do not know what I’m talking about, we have a lot of catching up to do.”

“Hey.” Fluffy waved. 

“So…you guys are here for the kids?” Miss Fitzgerald asked.

“We’re magical girls.” Nate explained. “Miss Pendleton is being targeted. We’re here to help.”

Agatha sighed as she sat on a bench.

Sam sat in the guest chair. “If this is about Callen and Rountree, they’re set up in San Diego, Fatima is working with the office in Camp Pendleton with Agent Flynn. He’s worked with us in the past.”

“If Callen and Rountree can’t handle a pair of Marines selling soon to be disabled grenades to a group of white separatists, then we’re all in trouble.”

“Rountree’s crash course in being a Marine went well. He should fit right in.”

“Well, I have an assignment for you,” the Admiral said, passing a file folder to Sam.

“Jane Tennant,” Sam said, looking at the file.

“She’s been through a bit of a rough patch. And I think you can help her through it but…”

“But…”

“Agent Tennant was beaten and tortured.”

“I know, you sent me to Venezuela to help find her.”

“And that assignment is what you do best – rescuing a colleague. You’ve been doing that for Callen since Hetty paired you two up.”

“We make a good team.”

“This assignment is more making sure she’s ready to return.”

“I’m sure she’ll requalify and their version of Nate will keep an eye on her.”

“Their version of Nate won’t be in the field with her. Won’t have someone like Callen making sure she’s in the right state of mind.”

“And you’d like me to be there.”

“The men who held Tennant threatened her family as they tortured her. She’s got a son who is going to Annapolis and a younger daughter.”

“Sounds familiar.”

“I understand if you don’t want to go to Pearl. I can send Nate if this is too close.”

“It’s not too close. I figured out how to live through my situation, Jane needs to do the same.”

“Washington wants an outsider to take a look at Tennant. Honestly, she’s too respected and too well liked by her office. If they need to sit Agent Tennant down for a while, they may not want to do that to her.”

“I think you are, Nate thinks you are, Leon Vance thinks you are.”

“Tomorrow, 0600 from Edwards. You stay as long as they need you.”

not sure if uve talked about this before but what are your thoughts on the catch 22 1970 film 🧐 the way alan arkin plays yossarian excuses the messier plot to me

The movie's grown on me over time; it gets a lot 'wrong,' but the book is a real beast to adapt so I mostly just admire that they went for it, and my own favorite performances are so random! Richard Benjamin as Danby, Orson Welles as Dreedle (+ Austen Pendleton playing off him as Moodus), and Olimpia Carlisi as Luciana. My favorite scenes are:

Scenes that are played for straight comedy are honestly more of a miss imo, but the briefing with Dreedle's nurse knocks it right out of the park

Back to your point- Arkin's definitely doing what I think was called for with the more 'out there' behaviors, but on second watch I actually really liked his take on a quieter Yossarian. It's hard to tell what he's thinking, which is at odds with the book's whole ethos but not out of character

King Louie Bankston — Harahan Fats (Goner Records)

King Louie Bankston, who passed away in February 2022 a little shy of his 50th birthday, will one day fit into the hallowed pantheon of New Orleans’s larger-than-life musical eccentrics. These are oddballs and outsiders and obsessives walking their own paths — Ernie K-Doe, Lazy Lester, post-Memphis Alex Chilton, Guitar Lightnin’ Lee, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, to name just a few — who stumble onto momentary household notoriety (to greater and much lesser degrees) through the sheer force of their creative will. Louie walked tall right beside them. 

Louie’s roots are planted firmly in the garage and punk scene of the late-1980s and early-1990s, which he located as one often does via an obsession with skateboarding. While he laid down some quality scorched-earth trash that might not initially be associated with traditional New Orleans music, Louie cast his net wide — from The Royal Pendletons to the Persuaders to his one-band to Loose Diamonds and Missing Monuments — knowing that it was all just music at the end of the day. While he would find perhaps his biggest success as a songwriter and auxiliary member of the Exploding Hearts, whose cult hit “I’m a Pretender” he penned, he was always writing, always recording, and always flipping the script, all the while keeping his creative voice firmly intact.

The posthumous release Harahan Fats (a nod to his hometown of Harahan, Louisiana), recorded over roughly a four-year period concluding in 2021, captures both the musical and personal contradictions of the man. It’s a sad, funny, catchy, messy, genuinely heartful record that works as both a nice introduction to an extensive career and a regrettably consummate postscript. 

Musically, the songs run the line from rickety power-pop janglers to country two-steppers to gospel-tinged, a cappella laments to dark, folk-tinged confessionals. Melodies and riffs and guitar licks feel instantly familiar but hard to pin down, as if they could only come from the scrambled brain of a genuine iconoclast. Louie’s irreverent humor is on full display on songs such as “Drunk at Work” and the bawdy ode to life’s basic necessities “Air Conditioning, Cold Drinks, Pickles & Pussy.” Other songs work as two-minute musical pulp novels, with Louie as the bandit on the run in the gritty world of the underground punk scene; a power-pop songwriter hopping trains, robbing banks, and running from the law. 

But there’s also an unflinchingly dark underbelly here that would be present whether Louie was still around or not. That he’s not, certainly doesn’t make those moments any brighter. It’s a darkness, though, born out of a commendable honesty. His reworking of “Rehab Legend,” an obscure rap song by Cadalack Ron, is searing and heartbreaking. He gives no quarter as he recounts fuck up after fuck up in brutal detail. Other songs aren’t quite as direct, but there are frequent references to addiction, regrets, attempted amends and the acknowledgment that life’s struggles can simply be too much to handle. That Louie passed so young is a sad reminder of the reality of such concerns. 

But this plaintiveness combined with Louie’s preternatural songwriting ability elevate this record to an instant classic. It cannot be overstated how easily these songs flow, and that effortlessness, rather than making the record feel tossed off, creates an intimacy you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find. As if Louie is saying to us, “Well, if country and rap and pop and garage and gospel and punk can go hand in hand then you can bet that laughter and tragedy and sobriety and backsliding and life and death and pickles and pussy do as well.”

WIP Wednesday

Hancock was really tired of seeing Deacon's stupid face. While he admired the concept of what Deacon did, Hancock found the man himself too quick to lie and not quick enough to help people who weren't synths. Despite his personal feelings, the Railroad helped people who couldn't help themselves so he held the organization in high esteem and did what he could to make their operations in Goodneighbor easier. Though in the wake of the assault on the Institute, it meant he met with Deacon far more than he was happy with. Now, Deacon was coming to him with a request for a favor.

“I'm getting a little sick of you calling in favors,” Hancock said as he sat behind his desk, for once. “I took care of Finn when he started harassing your ‘packages’ that came into town, and that's going to cost us when the next round of Super Mutants come knocking. Now you come asking for more?”

“I know, I know and don't get me wrong, we're grateful for everything you've done for us, but I'm not asking for us. I'm asking for Nate,” Deacon said. It was hard to read Deacon, with or without his damn sunglasses, but Hancock was sure he was on the level about this. Hancock didn't have a true soft spot for many individuals, but Nate Pendleton was one of them. There was no way he'd say no to the General.

“So explain to me why this one is special,” Hancock said with a resigned sigh. “I've seen you two rescue synth after synth and I've never been asked to babysit. Why not let the system handle this one too?”

Deacon gave an uncomfortable cough and looked away. “You heard that the Institute made a child synth of Shaun, right?”

“I remember. Nate was worried Piper wouldn't warm up to the kid,” Hancock filled in. He humored the non sequitur with the hope it would lead to an actual answer.

“Yeah, and good for him, she loves Shaun,” Deacon told him. That made Hancock feel good. If someone deserved a little peace and a family, it was Nate. “But that wasn't the only synth they made to try to get him to go along with their plans. Only he's pretty sure Piper won't accept this one quite as well.”

“Are you going to tell me?” Hancock prompted. This was the sort of waffling he disliked from Deacon when he really needed to just get to the point.

“Maybe it's better if you meet her,” Deacon said. Hancock's brow raised and gestured to the door.

“Fine, bring her in.”

The woman, synth but woman all the same, who came through the door at Deacon's prompting was dressed in clothes clearly borrowed from Fahrenheit. The road leathers hung loosely on her thin frame but she didn't have the nervous look that was common for recently freed synths. Her hair was long, dark, and healthier than anyone he'd seen in the wasteland. She was certainly pretty, with a glow to her skin that even other synths, soft as they were before coming to the surface, lacked.

“So this is the mayor here,” Deacon told her. “He’s going to help while we get everything figured out.” It took a lot for Hancock not to roll his eyes.

“John Hancock,” he introduced to the woman. “Though for the record, I never actually agreed to babysit.” Her face lit up at his name, her eyes were a ray of sunshine after a radstorm, her lips tilted up in response to a joke he hadn’t told.

“Nora Pendleton,” she introduced. That was a surprise. Nate had never mentioned his late wife's name, not to Hancock at least, but Deacon's little preamble along with the familiar last name said everything it needed to. He could understand why Nate's new lady love might object to this synth in particular. She stuck out her hand and Hancock smiled and met her halfway to shake. It was an old world tradition, but his father had taught him the value of a good handshake and he was certain his father would have been utterly charmed by hers.

HEADCANONS

Nate was the accidental product of a series of one-night stand between his career military father and anti-war protesting mother. The two met at a protest against the Vietnam War in 1971 in D.C., where a fresh-out-of-training Daniel Clarington found it particularly amusing to debate Claire Hayes, a college-drop out who, upon the release of the Pentagon Papers, decided her time was better spent getting the war-and military-shut down. One would think such a thing could blossom into love–it did not. But the sex was good, so around once a year, when they were in the same place, they would debate. That effectively ended when 9 months after their last meeting, Claire landed on Daniel’s doorstep with a bundle in her arms and a piss-poor explanation that she couldn’t keep him. Daniel, now 35, retired from the Army to care for his child.

With both the unceremonious arrival of an illegitimate child and his retirement from an esteemed position in the United States military, Daniel and Nate both were low on the totem pole of Clarington consideration as Nate grew up, which treated him just fine. While he and his father didn’t have the symbiosis of a close relationship, they held a mutual respect, as Nate was a good kid. He had good grades in school, the captain of multiple school sports, and was good at not getting caught with any of the trouble he’d get into.  

Nate joined the military for the same reasons many joined in the early 2000’s, what he calls a genetic disposition for patriotism soaring through him at the 9/11 attacks. His home had been attacked, and he wanted to defend it. However, joining the Marines, he would later admit that perhaps he was looking for at least a little glory as well. With outstanding scores on both written and physical tests (and the desperation a fully stocked Recon unit), Nate was quickly moved into the 1st Recon Battalion.

Despite the rocky start of his first deployments, the core connection of brotherhood and feeling of duty to his country kept him in the Marines for now 17 years. His current rank is Gunnery Sergeant. As of now, he’s providing training for incoming Marines at Camp Pendleton, about an hour south of Los Angeles. But with his love and knowledge, he works weekends at Fix-It garage just to pass the time.

Growing up, he assumed he was straight, really. Guys never really appealed to him, girls definitely did. But working closely with mostly sexually repressed men, including himself, his horizons were…broadened. He’s not one for relationships, really. Getting attached never did him any good.

DANIEL CLARINGTON AND CLAIRE HAYES (Parents): Nate has a good relationship with his dad; he was the one who stuck around, after all. His relationship with his mother begins and ends with the recognizing that she’s there. She attempted to reach out to him in his teenage years, but he wasn’t interested in hearing anything she had to say. He’s managed to work up to birthday cards and a very general wish of 'hope you don’t die’. PIPER CLARINGTON (Step-Mother): She’s fine, Nate supposes. Daniel and Piper got married when Nate was 15, and she’s never been anything but kind to him. But she never really made the choice to get to know him, and if he’s being honest, he didn’t really make the attempt either. HUNTER CLARINGTON (Cousin): Military cousins; haven’t talked in a while, but no ill-feeling between them. FRANK WRIGHT (Best Friend): Shared a lot of firsts together; first military campaign, experienced their first kills together, first time with a guy…just bro things. Frank is married with a family now, but the two are still close.

Nate Hopkins and John-Robert Pendleton, both are American Civil War veterans and both would pick a fight at the drop of a hat.

Mathafew is just a little bundle of rage, he's prickly and lacks people skills, he's always down for a fight and has to be drug away by his older brother who is usually the one with the brain cells.
